Colossal Biosciences: Leading the Future of De-Extinction and Climate Change Solutions

Aug 6, 2024

Introduction to Colossal Biosciences

Ever since I was a young boy, I have always loved the Jurassic Park series. I found it fascinating and incredible—the idea of humans being able to bring back a species or study it better by bringing it back was astonishing. Now, I can’t remember specifically where I heard about the Woolly Mammoth Project, but I understood that a company in the United States was looking to bring it back. This instantly drove me to take a look and follow their work. I’m also a huge animal lover.

Colossal Biosciences is an innovative biotech company focused on using cutting-edge technologies, such as gene editing, to de-extinct and conserve species. Their work aims to restore extinct species, starting with the woolly mammoth, and address broader biodiversity and climate change challenges. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the planet has lost 68% of its wildlife populations since 1970, highlighting the urgency of conservation efforts. Additionally, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the global average, leading to the thawing of permafrost which could release large amounts of greenhouse gases. Reintroducing species like the woolly mammoth could help mitigate this effect.

The Vision

What do you find most compelling about Colossal’s vision of using de-extinction to address environmental issues?

I really admire the outside-of-the-box thinking that Colossal Biosciences embodies. Using de-extinction to tackle environmental issues isn’t the first solution that comes to mind for most people, which makes their approach both innovative and groundbreaking. It’s incredibly hard work, and if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. This complexity and the potential applications of their technologies in various fields make their vision truly compelling.

Beyond this, the idea of restoring ecosystems to their former state by reintroducing species that played crucial roles is impressive. It shows how human ingenuity can help reverse some of the damage we’ve done to the planet. Additionally, their focus on climate change mitigation through projects like reintroducing the woolly mammoth to maintain permafrost and reduce greenhouse gas emissions is particularly noteworthy. It’s a powerful example of how advanced technology can be harnessed for the greater good of our planet.

Technological Approach

From a tech perspective, what excites you the most about the use of CRISPR and other gene-editing technologies in their projects?

Earths Friend

What excites me the most is that we’re only scratching the surface of what gene-editing technologies like CRISPR can do. In my opinion, we are just beginning to understand the immense potential these technologies hold. There are already incredible advancements in the fields of space and biosciences, and this is another frontier that could revolutionize our approach to various challenges. From fighting diseases to enabling more creative solutions for environmental conservation, the possibilities are vast and largely untapped. This sense of being at the forefront of groundbreaking innovation is incredibly exciting.

Ecological and Climate Impact

Colossal Bioscience

How do you see Colossal’s work impacting climate change and biodiversity on a global scale?

To start, the Mammoth Project is a perfect example of how Colossal’s work can have a significant impact on climate change and biodiversity. By reintroducing the woolly mammoth, they aim to help restore the Arctic tundra. Mammoths can knock down trees and help maintain grasslands, which in turn helps keep the permafrost intact. This is crucial because permafrost contains large amounts of greenhouse gases like methane, and preventing its thawing can significantly reduce emissions. This project highlights how de-extinction can contribute to combating climate change in innovative ways.

Moreover, I believe that human beings have a responsibility to address the environmental damage we’ve caused. If we were responsible for driving species to extinction, as was the case with extensive hunting in the past, it is up to us to bring them back when we have the capability. This is evident in projects like the potential revival of species impacted by events like the Tasmanian cyclone, showcasing our ability to rectify past mistakes and restore ecological balance.

Additionally, Colossal’s work sets a precedent for how we can use advanced technologies to preserve and enhance biodiversity. By focusing on de-extinction and conservation, they demonstrate that we can find creative solutions to protect and restore our natural world, which is crucial for the health of our planet.

Ethical and Social Implications

Floods

What are your thoughts on the ethical considerations of de-extinction, and how do you balance these concerns with the potential benefits?

“A man is trapped in a flood and prays to God to save him. As the waters rise, a neighbor in a rowboat comes by and says, ‘Hop in, I can save you.’ The man replies, ‘No, it’s okay. I’m praying to God, and He will save me.’ Later, as the water level rises, a man in a motorboat comes by and says, ‘Hop in, I can save you.’ The stranded man again replies, ‘No thanks, I’m praying to God, and He will save me.’ The waters keep rising, and a helicopter comes by, with a rescuer shouting, ‘Grab the rope, I’ll lift you to safety.’ The man once again replies, ‘No thanks, I’m praying to God, and He will save me.’ Eventually, the man drowns. Upon reaching heaven, he asks God, ‘Why didn’t you save me?’ God replies, ‘I sent you a rowboat, a motorboat, and a helicopter. What more did you expect?’

When it comes to the ethical considerations of de-extinction, I believe it’s essential to view the scientific advances we have as the tools provided to us to solve these problems. Just like the man in the story who ignored the boats and helicopters sent to save him, we shouldn’t overlook the incredible technologies at our disposal. God, or the universe, has given us the means to address the environmental and ecological issues we face through advancements like gene editing and de-extinction.

Imagine if, instead of a flood, we are dealing with climate change and biodiversity loss. We pray for solutions to save our planet. Science then offers us CRISPR technology, genetic advancements, and projects like the reintroduction of the woolly mammoth. But if we ignore these tools, hoping for a miraculous solution, we miss the opportunities right in front of us. Just like the rowboat, motorboat, and helicopter in the story, these scientific advancements are the answers to our prayers. By embracing and utilizing these breakthroughs, we can actively work towards fixing the problems ourselves.

In this sense, de-extinction and the work of Colossal Biosciences are not only ethically justifiable but also necessary steps toward actively restoring and protecting our planet. We have the tools to combat climate change and restore biodiversity—it’s up to us to use them.

Future Outlook

What do you think are the most exciting future projects Colossal might undertake, and how do you see their work evolving in the next decade?

“Some of the most exciting future projects for Colossal Biosciences involve the potential revival of other extinct species beyond the woolly mammoth. They have mentioned other projects they are working on, such as the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) and the Balinese tiger, which were incredible species lost due to human activities. Reviving these species could have significant ecological benefits and help restore balance to their native environments.

In addition to these projects, Colossal’s work could evolve to address more complex environmental challenges. For example, bringing back the Barbary lion, a species once native to North Africa, could help restore the ecological balance in regions where they played a critical role as apex predators. Similarly, reviving the passenger pigeon could help reestablish the natural processes in North American forests.

We made some grave mistakes in the past with hunting, changing climates, and deforestation, leading to the extinction of many species. It is up to us to bring certain animals back where we can. By focusing on these ambitious projects, Colossal is not only working to correct past wrongs but also paving the way for a future where advanced technologies can help us maintain ecological balance and biodiversity. Over the next decade, I see Colossal continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible in biotechnology and conservation, creating a more sustainable and biodiverse world.
